I want to buy a kumquat tree. A friend has two different kinds and one is sweet and the other is not sweet. We like the sweeter one. Can you tell me which one is sweeter? I shop at two or three of your dealers close to me and have many of your plants. I assume, if they do not have the sweet one in stock, they can order from you.

Joyce,

There are two main kumquat varieties sold in this country. They are 'Nagami' and 'Meiwa'. Monrovia carries 'Nagami'.

The fruits of Nagami kumquats are oblong, about 3/4" to 1" in diameter and between 1" to 2" long. The fruit have sweet rinds and sour interiors making them great for use in cooking and/or for marmalades and jellies.

Meiwa kumquats have round fruit, about 1.5 inches in diameter. They are a bit of an opposite from Nagami as Meiwa fruits have sour rinds and sweet pulp. As such they are often referred to as "sweet kumquats". They have few seeds and are best eaten whole. While they are very good to eat, it is not recommended that you use them for cooking or for marmalade as they lack the tartness of the Nagami kumquats.

I am not sure which variety your friend has that you prefer so if you can find that out from them this will help determine if it is the one Monrovia carries.

Monrovia is a wholesale nursery. Their plants are available only through local retail garden centers.

Check out the following web site. It has a box for you to enter your zip code and will then give you a list of local retailers that carry Monrovia plants:
