| I have a large (17x15) front flower bed with a sidewalk that connects my driveway to the door and am looking for a plant specimen/ focal point for it and I havn't yet been able to come up with anything. It would be sun to partial shade. I am looking at maybe a crapapple or dogwood but feel that this may get to tall? any help would be greatly appreciated! |
| Here are three suggestions for the site you describe: Oklahoma' Redbud is one of the nicest (if not the nicest) Redbuds grown by the industry. The glossy leaves always draw attention to the tree even by those unconcerned about trees. It is highly drought tolerant once established and grows well in all areas within its hardiness range. Amur Maple is a beautiful ornamental maple with brilliant red foliage color in Autumn and fruit which sports bright pink wings. It is very drought tolerant and usually will not die back even in the hottest summers. The plant is sometimes used in hedges or screens, and can be used for planting along streets beneath power lines. It makes a nice specimen or patio tree. This variety is smaller than the species. The foliage lobes are cut deeper than the species. Kousa Dogwood or Japanese flowering dogwood is a handsome small specimen tree or shrub. The Kousa is not as susceptible to disease as the white dogwood in spring. It is planted as a specimen, near a patio, or in groupings. Blooms later and with a softer petal flower than the white flowering dogwood. Because of its disease resistance, it is becoming the best replacement for the white dogwood. The Kousa is not particularly drought- or heat-tolerant, requiring irrigation during drought periods in summer. All will fit nicely in the space you have without concern about them overtaking the area. Enjoy! |
