| Viburnum odoratissimum is a large fast growing evergreen shrub that has large bright green leathery leaves and provides a showy profusion small fragrant white flowers in spring . Berries turn from red to black and are attractive to birds. The robust nature of Sweet Viburnum allows for a wide range of growing conditions but it will perform best in partial shade. Sweet Viburnum can get up to 20 feet tall and can be used as a background hedge, screen, or can become treelike if given enough time and space. They are hardy in USDA zones 8-10; you're in zone 5 so they won't be too happy in the winter months in your garden (they tolerate only 40F as a low temperature). There are many other shrubs with similar appearance which are hardier in your zone. How about spirea, escallonia, or viburnum davidii? |
