Answer: There are a number of deciduous and evergreen plants you could use, but if you limit yourself to evergreens the list becomes rather short when looking at very heavy shade. You might try the Christmas fern, Vinca minor, or Hedera helix (look for some of the cultivars with interesting coloring in the foliage for added interest.) If you add in semi-evergreen and deciduous plants you could consider Liriope and Mondo grass, hostas, many additional ferns, Tiarella, and Ligularia nummularia "Aurea" for example. These would add interest in terms of foliage shape as well as color. Add in a mulched or pebbled pathway, perhaps some large ornamental stones and a good looking bench along with a bird bath and you will have ample interest year round. For added summer color, use a large container (such as a half barrel size) of colorful impatiens. Enjoy!
