Are you supposed to cut off all the plant in the winter as the dead shoots are brown?? My husband can't stand the dead look, I say it provides protection for the tree during the winter so it will be healthy when it turns green again in the spring and summer. We planted this palm, as a baby, when we first moved into our home, and it is now grown like crazy in our backyard. Help us with your answer!!

Maureen,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

The brown fronds do protect the tree but very little. If your husband doesn't like the look then you can go ahead and remove them back to the trunk. However if all the fronds are brown this is not a good sign and the tree's top may have been killed in which case it will not recover. Time and warm weather will tell whether or not it will come back.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
