The Q&A Archives: Pruning a Waxleaf Privet

Question: I live in Portland, Oregon. When should I prune my waxleaf privet? Any suggestions regarding pruning? Thanks so much.

Answer: Waxleaf privet can be sheared or you can prune by hand, removing branch tips at random to give your shrub a more natural appearance. The flowers on your waxleaf privet should last about 3 weeks. You can wait until the flowers fade before pruning your shrubs, or you can prune now and cut the flowers off (some people find they produce an unpleasant scent). Either way, your privet will rebound with brand new growth a few weeks after being pruned.
