Hi,

I have some of these palm trees in my back yard by my pool. I recently moved into this house. These trees are now brown with the exception of one. It is still green. How should I take care of these? Do I need to cut off the fan branches that are brown? Not sure how to take care of these trees.

Thank You,

Nancy Wilson

Nancy,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Cut off any brown fronds back to the trunk. If all the fronds are brown the top bud of the tree may be killed in which case the tree will be dead. Give it some time after the weather warms to see if new growth appears in the top of the trunk. Hopefully the top bud survived and is fine. When growth begins fertilize with a turf type fertilizer applying a cup in a 10 by 10 area around the tree and repeat again a couple of months later. Water the fertilizer in well after applications.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
