The Q&A Archives: hippeastrum hybrid

Question: I have a large hippeastrum bulb about 4

Answer: Amaryllis bulbs are great to keep from year to year. First, trim off the bloom stems once all the flowers have faded. Now keep the foliage growing as you would any houseplant. Place in the brightest window you have. Water as needed to keep the soil slightly moist and fertilize regularly with a water soluble fertilizer for houseplants such as 10-10-10 per the label instructions. Next fall, stop watering and allow the foliage to wither and dry up. Trim off the dried out foliage and set the pot in a cool location at about 50 degrees. Let it rest for 8 to 10 weeks. Then bring out of storage, water once and set it in a bright location so it begins to grow again. Water lightly and look forward to blooms in about two months. Enjoy!
