I live in Austin Texas area. My Mexican heather plants have died back during the winter. Do I cut down the dead shrub, and will a new shrub grow in it's place? |
Virginia, Mexican heather is a dependable perennial in south Texas, but in the Austin area it is rather "iffy" and generally considered to be an annual plant. After a mild winter in your area it may slowly emerge after the weather really warms up a lot. You can cut it back to a couple of inches high and wait and see. Mulching it well over winter can help save the base or crown portion of the plant but is no guarantee. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
