Is it possible to grow strawberries in the San Fernando Valley? If so do I need to protect them from the heat by watering often and shading them?

Strawberries like full summer sunshine, fast-draining sandy soil, and lots of water when they're producing berries. One of the most flavorful varieties is Tristar. It's ever-bearing so you'll get tasty fruit all summer long. The plants will send runners out with new plants which you can allow to root. After rooting cut the runners away and replant in another location. Plan on keeping the new plants and removing the older parent plants about every 3 years.
