The Q&A Archives: Outdoor Potted Plants

Question: Can you recommend a colorful nonflowering plant that can strive in a pot and somewhat drought tolerant. The pot will be on my terrace. It would be interesting to have a plant that has red or blue foliage. I'm not a big fan of grasses and variegated plants. Thanks for you help.

Answer: You might try an agave (nice blue/gray) or possibly a phormium of some type (some nice red/purple tones.) These would need to be overwintered indoors in a cool location but would do well in a container in a hot and sunny situation. Both are sculptural in form and very effective alone or combined with other containers.
