| I live in fort lauderdale florida and recently planted two 4' tall healthy foxtail palms in my front yard. I used good potting soil mixed with some peat humus and native surrounding soil. I mixed a little root stimulator with water and watered them well.I also put one palm tree fertilizer spike at the base in the ground as directed. I water it every other day and I am noticing that some of the leaves are turning brown from the leave tips inward. The new frond growths seem green and healthy but i am concerned about many of the leaves turning brown and some withering. What am I doing wrong???? |
| David, The browning can be due to several different things. We usually recommend just using soil from the site as an amended planting hole can become an "underground bathtub" that holds water after a rain, unless you soil is very sandy. They may have stayed too wet or too dry. Otherwise the problem may just be stress from transplanting which will fix itself in time and with adequate care. Watch the watering and try to just keep the soil moist. Hopefully in spring they will start growing normally again. At that point you might want to provide a little supplemental fertilizer such as a standard lawn type blend. The spikes are fine but it will take some time for roots to find the spike and grow in that area. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
