reently you send a response regarding the method of planting and protecting the fig tree we have, thank you for that information. we plan on planting the tree in the spring and covering and protecting it as you suggested in your email in the fall. I am inquiring about when, how and with what should I fertilze the tree, should it be done in the spring when it's planted and again when it's put down for the winter? thank you again for responding.

Figs actually need little fertilizing as long as your soil is at least average in fertility. You could apply a top dressing of good quality compost and/or 10-10-10 granular all purpose fertilizer in early spring each year. A rule of thumb might be a half a cup per tree spread beneath the drip line. Then use an organic mulch to help feed the soil on an ongoing basis. Do not feed in the fall. If you overfertilize, the tree will be less cold tolerant so it is better to under do it than over do it. Good luck with your fig tree!
