How can I grow hostas successfully in this climate? I have tried in shade and partial shade, but had no success.

Hostas will grow in full shade in your growing region and are happiest in slightly acidic soil generously amended with organic matter. They prefer moist but well draining soils. Try growing them in pots and placing them in the shadiest spot in your garden. If they don't like where you have them you can move them to another spot. Once you find a site they like you can plant them permanently. Be sure to mix lots of compost into the planting bed prior to installing your hostas. Best wishes with your garden!
