Hydrangea macrophylla 'Mariesii Variegata' is very well suited to a container and you can keep the plant about 4' tall and wide so it won't become over-whelming in a small space. You'll want to eventually move it into a half-whiskey barrel sized container so there will be plenty of room for root growth and so the container will be stable enough to keep the plant from toppling over in a wind storm. Use a good grade of potting soil to fill your container or a mixture of half potting soil and half garden soil. The addition of potting soil will ensure the medium drains well yet holds just the right amount of moisture to keep the hydrangea happy. Enjoy!
