| After installing a pond in our yard we notice an infestation of slugs. Is the pond the direct cause of this problen? |
| Slugs live under damp materials such as pebbles, stones, and mulch and prefer damp shady areas. (They do not live in water.) To control slugs in flower beds, try raking the surface lightly in late winter or very early spring to disturb them and expose them to cold air. Then, if necessary, use an iron phosphate-based bait product (Sluggo is one brand) to kill them off. This is much safer to use around people and animals or pets than the older metaldehyde-based baits. Be sure to read and follow the label directions. You can also encourage their natural enemies such as toads and birds by avoiding the use of poisonous chemicals in your garden. Handpicking (at night when they are active, drop them into soapy water) can also be helpful in achieving faster control. I hope this helps. |
