The Q&A Archives: Leafless Akebia Worries

Question: I planted akebia against a lattice-covered brick courtyard wall last year. Unfortunately, the leaves were decimated by what I think were Japanese beetles. Now the vines are bare except for the top 12

Answer: Joan,

Good question. I suspect that the new growth will mostly come at the tops of the plants but you may want to wait and see before cutting it back. If there is not any new growth from down the bare part of the plant then you could still cut it back to near the ground level.
