I live in USDA Zone 8. We had an unusually mild Dec. - mid Feb. Many of my shrubs showed new 'spring-like' growth - particularly the Photinia and Rock Roses and Lavender. One of my Rhodies - the one that gets the most sun - even bloomed! Then winter finally came with temps. dipping into the low 20's at night. Much of this new growth was killed. Should I prune away the killed foliage now or wait until spring? What about the killed flowers on this Rhodie? Thank you. |
Wait until new growth begins, then prune away any winter damage. If you prune too early and you have another late frost, the new growth will be killed back (again). Wait until you're sure spring has really arrived. Best wishes with your garden. |
