The Q&A Archives: Container gardening in Southern Louisiana

Question: What type of plants and flowers would make a nice patio container in sunny/hot Louisiana?

Answer: Lisa,

There are many great options for your area. Some great perennials include dwarf Lantana, trailing Lantana, Bulbine, Blackfoot Daisy, Blue Daze (Evolvulus), Coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.), Fleabane or Mexican Daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus) and Indian Blanket (Gaillardia pulchella).

Heat tolerant annual flower for sunny patio container include dwarf varieties of Zinnia, Narrowleaf Zinnia (Zinnia linearis), Moss Rose (Portulaca), Mexican Heather (Cuphea), Melampodium, Purslane, Dahlberg Daisy (Thymophylla tenuiloba) and heat tolerant coleus varieties (such as Plum Parfait and Burgundy Sun).

Make sure the container is fairly large as this provides more root area which the plants will need in such a hot, demanding climate. Water regularly to keep the soil moist and fertilize monthly during the growing season with a soluble plant food at the label rate.
