Charles,

Gardenias are a bit fussy about being treated according to their liking. They love a bright spot with morning sun and then a bright shade. They like moist acidic soil, but also need good drainage. Therefore for best results build a raised planting bed with lots of composted organic matter. Keep their soil moist with regular watering. Feed them every month with a fertilizer for acid loving plants, such as one that says it is for azaleas and camellias or with natural products like fish emulsion and bone meal. Prune it back after it blooms in the spring to summer. Cut the leggy shoots back to just within the rest of the shrub canopy. This will give it time to regrow shoots and set buds for next season's blooms.
