Color is difficult to get in shady spots. Some of your better options include annuals such as impatiens, caladiums, and wishbone flower (if the shade is fairly bright), or a blooming shrub like dwarf azaleas, virginia sweetspire(white blooms) or pieris (white blooms). The yellow and green leaves of Picturata Aucuba (Aucuba japonica 'Picturata') are also showy in the shade but the plant grows to 4-6 feet tall. Sunrise Variegated Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora 'Sunrise') is another good option and reaches 3-5 feet tall.
