I can't tell if it's an insect or disease. There are pus-like lines running up the trunk, near the first large branches. It's been a healthy tree, planted about 4 years ago. What can we treat it with?

I can't suggest a treatment without knowing exactly what the problem is because applying the wrong thing can do more harm than good. From your description, I'm not sure what that is. Could it be just sap running from a small wound? I suggest you take samples of the problem to Pima County Cooperative Ext., 4210 Campbell Ave, Tucson, 520-626-5161. They have Master Gardeners and a Horticulturist who can diagnose what it is. Take some of the pus and any sample of anything that might be related. Good luck!
