Can you tell me where to find most comprehensive horticultural databases on the web for details about individual species and varieties?

You can try the following sites. I've had trouble getting into a few of them, and others seem to be works in progress:

USDA Plants Project: http://plants/usda.gov
The Virtual Garden: http://pathfinder.com/vg
Univ of Illinois: www.aces.uiuc.edu/~vo-ag/aglinks/hort.htm
The Garden Gate at: [email protected] Ohio State: http://www.hcs.ohio-state.edu/......
There is also garden planning software, such as Burpee's 3-D Garden Designer (on CD) with an encyclopedia of plants.

Sometimes, the best information can be gleaned from mail-order companies' catalogs.
