| My question is: I have a birdbath that is made of heavy metal. We bore holes in it for drainage to make it a planter. Everything I've tried in it dies. I don't know if its because it gets to hot and burns the roots or the sun is just to hot. The planter gets sun from about 11:00am till sundown. It looks very nice where it is sitting so, I hate to move it. Do you know of any perennials or annuals that might live in this type of planter. I have tried moss rose and petunias. | Mona, It may be that your birdbath planter is too shallow and thus the roots can't go very deep for a more dependable supply of moisture. The metal getting hot can be a contributing factor also. If you are going to keep the planter in a sunny location you might try a more drought tolerant plant like one of the succulents. Some produce small blooms and some will also trail over the sides. The moss rose or its close cousin portulaca should also be able to take the sun and shallow planter if you keep the soil moist but not too wet. Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon! |
