If you want to grow a prizewinning sized pumpkin, here are a few tips: Amend the garden area with lots of aged manure. Then plant several seeds in hills and space the hills a few yards apart. When your plants have developed two or three pumpkins, choose one and remove the rest. Also pinch back the other vines, so the plant has just one vine and one fruit to concentrate on. Then apply lots of water during the season and be sure to put your pumpkin on a piece of plywood to keep it from direct contact with the soil. It may rot on the bottom if you don't. Each hill you've planted will reward you with one super-sized pumpkin at the end of the season.

For your area, plant the seeds about the first of April. By then the soil should be warm enoughfor the seeds to germinate without rotting.

Good luck!
