| Do you prune them back in the fall; and when would you expect to see regrowth? |
| Weigela shrubs bloom on the previous year?s growth, so the best time to prune is immediately after the blooming season (roughly midsummer). If you?re anxious to trim them sooner and you don?t mind missing this year?s flowers, you can prune in early spring at the first sign of new growth. Weigela responds well to a major haircut, so don?t be shy with your pruners. Before you cut back for height, you should renovate the shrub by cutting one or two of the oldest stems all the way to the ground. Next, remove any dead or diseased branches to the point where they meet healthy growth. If you want your shrubs to be only eight feet tall, for example, cut them back to seven feet since they will fill in the extra foot during the growing season. Do this by trimming individual branches back to just above a bud swelling or an existing sideshoot. If you want to maintain the shrubs at this height, plan on an annual post-bloom pruning session that removes the flowered stems down to strong shoots a tad below the spent flowers. Weigela should show new growth by late spring. |
