The Q&A Archives: what materials should I usoil improvement

Question: What kind of materials should I use to lighten the soil in a raised garden bed?

Answer: Organic matter such as compost, half finished compost, old rotten leaves, well rotted and aged stable manure/bedding, milled spagnum peat moss or whatever material you have locally available can all be added to the raised bed. You may also want to add some coarse builders sand (not the fine beach sand) if you have mixed in some of the native soil, especially if it is clay based.
