How should I condition the soil to plant trees in an area that has heavy clay soil that prevents good drainage

Since the tree's roots will soon grow out beyond the planting hole, it is important to select a tree that can handle the native soil, perhaps something like a river birch or red maple. Your local county extension and/or professionally trained garden center staff should be able to help you select something suitable for the location where you want to plant.
