Is it perennial for zone 5, and do I need to cut back the old growth before spring?

Lavender is perennial in your growing zone but will need some winter protection to keep the roots alive during the winter months. In the spring you can cut back all the winter damaged stems and foliage. The roots should produce new shoots when the weather warms. Enjoy your lavender!
