We're in NE Pasadena near Victory Park. We've just added to our house and now need a couple of shade trees for the front yard. Any suggestions for trees with well behaved roots and not messy? We want something different from the Liquid Ambers, Jacarandas, Magnolias and Chinese Elms that are everywhere in our neighborhood.

THANKS!

Ornamental pear (Pyrus kawakami) is an evergreen tree that is well-behaved and doesn't drop messy flowers, fruit or seed pods. Cork Oak (Quercus suber) is evergreen, and tolerates wide range of growing conditions. Other suggestions include Holly Oak (Quercus ilex), Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergiana), and Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana). I also think fruitless mulberry is an excellent shade tree; it's fast-growing, deciduous, and has a dense canopy which provides lots of summer shade. Hope one of these suggestions is just right for your landscape.
