We are planning on ripping out the small lawn in back and replacing it with some sort of decorative rock. What would you recommend to fill the space? We'd also like to use a complimentary stone in the flower beds. Any suggestions?

Kelly,

I assume you are asking about plants for the rocked area. There are many options to choose from. The key is to get plants that can take the reflected heat off of the rocks. Most shrubs and trees adapted to your climate can take such heat. You might want to consider using something other than rock such as decorative mulch as it creates less reflected heat and can be replenished over time as it decomposes to build the soil. The if you wish to add some specimen decorative boulders or large rocks here and there you can certainly do so.
