Can I Plant tangerine in the end or in middle of my roses plantation? What is the best spot for a guava tree? Somebody advised me to first use a big planter for a year and then transfer it to ground next year to avoid frosting. I live in San Jose,CA. |
Citrus will grow in San Jose but lemons and oranges are the best choices; tangerines tend to remain slightly sour because they don't usually get quite enough heat during the summer months. You can plant citrus in any sunny location; one with protection from wind and where heat will be reflected (from a building) will produce the sweetest fruit. Planting in a container and moving the tree to a protected spot during the winter will assure it won't become frost damaged, but eventually the tree will become cumbersome and difficult to move. Instead, I'd choose varieties that perform well in your area such as: Lane's Late Navel, Robertson Navel, Valencia, and Washington Navel oranges; Clementine, Dancy, Encore, Fremont, Kara, Kinnow, Page, and Satsuma Mandarines; Minneola Tangelo, Eureka, Lisbon, and Meyer Lemons, or Bearrs Lime. Pineapple Guavas that grow well in San Jose include Coolidge, Nazemetz, Pineapple Gem, Superba, and Trask. |
