Crabgrass preventer works as a pre-emergent, meaning it stops the seeds from germinating. Crabgrass seeds begin to germinate very early while the soil is still cold. The rule of thumb is to put it down when the yellow forsythia bushes begin to show color in your neighborhood. The exact date will vary a bit from year to year depending on the weather.
