Steve,

Well it can be too much sun or possibly some type of disease. The climate you are in has some pretty long brutal summers for hostas. Take care to keep the soil moist but not soggy wet. Next summer if the problem returns take some leaves showing the damage to your County Extension Office and see if they can identify the cause of the damage. They would then be able to recommend an appropriate course of action.
