The best time to start a new lawn from sod or seed is in late August or early September. The best grass variety depends on your soil as well as the amount of sun. (Full sun is best for lawn grasses so that is fine.) I would suggest you work with your local Cornell extension to determine which specific grass variety would be best for your situation. They should also be able to help you with soil testing as well as instructions for planting and maintaining your lawn. In the meantime, here is some information to help you get started. The new lawn directions are listed under September. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

Good luck with your new lawn!
