HI WE HAVE A WELL ESTABLISHED JAPANESE MAPLE,LAST YR WE DECIDED TO REARANGE THE GARDEN NOT TOUCHING OR MOVING THE MAPLE. ALL WE DID WAS TO MOVE 2 SHEDS THAT WERE AT THE SIDE OF THE PLANT.WE REPLACED THESE WITH A GAZEBO. LATER LAST YR WE NOTICED THE LEAVES CURLING UP AND FALLING OFF.WE ARE NOW IN APRIL AND THE LEAVES HAVE NOT STARTED TO GROW BACK. HELP DESPARATE ADVICE NEEDED THANX.

It is possible that the activity either damaged roots or changed the drainage pattern so that the tree was left drier than before, or the swap of gazebo for shed might have exposed the tree to more wind and also winter exposure than it experienced before. Or it might have compacted the soil, causing root problems. These types of environmental change can cause stress and if severe enough, kill a tree. But it is also possible that the problem is not related to that at all, and instead is a disease or pest problem. I would suggest you consult on site with a professionally trained arborist who specializes in ornamental trees and see if you can piece together what has happened and determine what might be done to save the tree. I'm sorry you are having trouble with it!
