Any evergreen shrub tends to grow topheavy if you don't prune to keep the top more narrow than the base. Once foliage is lost at the bottom it may take a severe pruning followed by light trimming as it regrows to retain the proper proportions.
Camellia sasanqua varieties bloom in early to late winter and Camellia japonica varieties bloom in late winter to early spring.
It's not too late for gladiolus but don't delay any later.
