The Q&A Archives: live oak tree

Question: hello,i live in texas, dallas and i am having yards of about 4000sq mt and i want to plant a live oak tree,so i want to know about its detail, like is it a evergreen,is it going to be too messy, does it have thorns or acorns, and what other care i need to take for its good growth and maintence.thank you

Answer: Arwa,

Live oaks are semi evergreen tending to lose most of the leaves in late winter but quickly putting on more. They don't have thorns but do produce acorns which are generally not a big deal. When you plant the tree mulch a large area around it to keep weeds away. If you can mulch out to 5-10 feet from the trunk that is great. Water enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Fertilize in spring, early summer, mid summer and late summer with a cup or two of turf fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter spread evenly in a large area extending out from the trunk to 1 1/2 times the branch spread in all directions. Water the fertilizer in well after applications.
