We are looking to build a paved walkway that leads to a 12 foot cirle, up to our entrance of our house. We would like the look of an all season evergreen with flowers in growing season, all along the walkway on both sides leading up to the house. We live in Rochester, NY-I believe Zone 5. Since we have a long winter we would like to see green along our walkway throughout the winter months. Any good ideas? Thank you.

Your zip code places you in zone 5B or the warmer part of zone 5. Depending on your microclimate and how exposed the site is, it might be as cold as zone 5A. You might use one of the smaller, extra hardy rhododendrons such as Rhododendron x 'Purple Gem' (H-1) which grows about two feet tall and three feet wide. Another option would be to use one of the newer very hardy boxwoods that keep a good green all winter, and front them with annuals for all summer color. Your local nursery should offer a selection of these. They may also have other suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the growing conditions where you want to plant and your overall design goals. Best of luck with your planting!
