Can azaleas be planted in pots for a patio? What special care do they need if this is possible?

In your winter hardiness zone 6A, I would not expect them to survive the winter in containers because their roots would not be insulated from either extreme cold, or from the oscillating temperatures we so often have in spring. Since they bloom for such a short period, in my opinion they are not really the best for a patio display anyway. And to make it even less promising, they are very difficult to maintain long term as a container plant under home conditions. I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging.
