HI,
We just moved in into a new house last summer and trying to get the landscaping done this year. We have consider to put Privet Hedge along the fence for privicy and plant new two Maple Trees. How far away from hedges do we have to plant the trees and what would be the best Maple to plant that has medium growth rate? Also, should we wait planting the trees until next year if we want to plant hedges first or can this all be planted in one season?
Thank you.

You can install your landscape all at once or do it a little at a time. It won't matter at all to the plants. If the house is new and has never had any landscaping done at all, you might want to amend the soil with plenty of organic matter prior to planting anything. Organic matter such as compost or aged manure will help loosen the soil and help it drain well so the roots of your trees and shrubs can remain healthy. When you plant trees and shrubs, always take into consideration their mature size and give them plenty of elbow room so they will grow without crowding. Privet is a popular plant for privacy screening. I'd space the privets 2-3' apart for good coverage. Keep the plants at least 4' away from the fence so they have adequate growing room. Maple trees that grow well in your area include Red Maple (Acer rubrum) which is quite large (40' tall 25' wide), and Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum). Either will provide plenty of summer shade. Best wishes with your new landscape!
