Answer: Burgundy desert willow makes an attractive small tree. It will have an open, airy canopy so growing other plants beneath it should not be a problem. The roots can be expected to grow mostly in the top 12-18 inches of soil and extend out about as far and the canopy is wide. I don't think the roots will invade a leach line that's 8-10' away. Leach lines are typically too deep to be bothered by most shrubs and perennials, especially if they are kept 8-10' away from the lines.
