I am thinking of planting a Carolina Laurel on the side of my house, right next to the garage door. there is only 4-5' that separates my house from the side of my neighbors house. Is this shrub a good idea? How tall will it get? Does it get wide? What else might you reccomend that has soft, year round green leaves? Thanks!

Thomas,

It is going to be too large for that spot since even the more compact variety Bright N Tight grows at a moderate rate reaching 8 to 10 feet tall, 6 to 8 feet wide, larger if untrimmed. Depending on how tall you want the plant to be you might consider the following:

SIENNA SUNRISE? HEAVENLY BAMBOO
DWARF HEAVENLY BAMBOO (Nandina domestica 'Compacta')
BLUE CONE ARBORVITAE (Thuja orientalis 'Blue Cone' )
DWARF GOLDEN ARBORVITAE (Thuja orientalis 'Aurea Nana')

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
