The Q&A Archives: plants to aid in pest control

Question: What plants would be good for planting around a porch or deck, to aid in controlling of keeping away mosquito's and flies?

Answer: Although we occasionally see some lemon scented plants suggested as mosquito or insect repellents, in my experience they are not effective. If you have severe insect problems, you might consider screening the porch to keep them out, or use a spray-on insect repellent on yourselves. Otherwise, you might talk to your local county extension about methods for controlling the insects in your yard to reduce the population near where you are sitting. I'm sorry there really aren't any really effective plants for this purpose.
