If your lilac is surrounded by lawn that is being routinely fertilized, you may not need to fertilize the lilac beyond that. In a shrub bed or similar location, lilacs do well with a spring application of a general purpose granular or general purpose slow release fertilizer. Read and follow the label directions. You can also top dress with some good quality compost in the spring. Then use a layer of two to three inches of organic mulch year round. This will also help feed the soil slowly over time as it breaks down.
