We lost a Japanese Maple "Red Filligree Lace" last season to some kind of leaf curl. I'd like to replant, but I'm
afraid of losing another specimen. Can you tell me how to
treat this kind of infection ?

Many maples are susceptible to a disease called verticillium wilt. It affects the entire vascular system and results in the death of the tree. Verticillium is a soilborne fungus that's almost impossible to eradicate. You may want to find a replacement tree other than a maple if you want to replant in the same spot.
