I have very rocky clay soil. I'm trying to find a tree or shrub that can grow next to a pool, but will provide some privacy between our house and our neighbors'. I'm hoping to get something around 15 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide at the maximum width (to block views into the 2nd story of our houses). I don't like anything with a juniper look to it, but I also don't want something so wide that it covers my narrow pool. Would love a tropical look, but don't know if that's really possible. It gets to 105 degrees here.

Instead of a tree, why not plant several upright shrubs? This will provide a dense privacy screen and shrubs will be easier to maintain at the height and width you desire. Indian laurel is a broadleaf upright shrub that takes well to most soils, grows well in hot summer areas and has only insignificant flowers (so bees won't be a problem near your pool). Hope this suggestion works for you.
