What would make a good dense shade tolerant evergreen shrub for Northeast Tennessee usually zone 6? Zone 4 and 5 shrubs would probably survive here as well.

You might consider rhododendrons, yews, Himalayan sarcococcus, Schipka cherry laurel, and possibly Japanese hollies among others. In light shade you could also try boxwood. Your selection will depend on the size shrub you need and the growing conditions (how much shade and the time of day, the soil type and moisture levels, wind exposure, and so on) and your overall design goals. Your local county extension and professionally trained nursery staff should be able to help you analyze the growing conditions and make suggestions also. Good luck with your evergreens!
