| I have eight Imperial Oak trees surrounding my property, and the entire yard is partial to full shade. I love roses, and would like to plant them, is this possible? Do roses tolerate shade & acid soil? |
| Most roses require 6-8 hours of direct sunshine in order to perform well. The class of roses known as hybrid musks will tolerate quite a bit of shade. Most are disease resistant repeat bloomers as well. Most will do OK on 1-2 hours of sun, while others can thrive in dappled shade quite well. None will tolerate a complete lack of light like a north wall with trees that never sees any light, but if you've got some reflected light from a house or a fence to brighten up the shade, they'll do well. Ballerina is probably the best known. It has blooms that resemble appleblossoms. The size is about a 4'X4' mound of blooms. Belindais the second best known one. It's a hot pink color, and is about a 5'X5'. Buff Beauty is apricot colored, and can be used as a large shrub or climber. It has one of the best scents of they hybrid musks, and would be great scrambling up a small tree. A favorite Hybrid Musk. Cornelia is light to medium pink and also makes quite a large shrub. Good fragrance to this one too. Darlow's Enigma is white, and is the most shade tolerant of the bunch. Wonderful scent. Other recommendations include Felicia, Kathleen, Mozart, Nastarana, Nymphenburg, Pax, Lavender Lassie, and Prosperity. |
