Last year's hostas and ferns are popping their heads out of the ground. What can I put around the shoots to give them what they need this growing season (to retain moisure and to replenish their soil?

You can apply a topdressing of good quality compost and top that with an organic mulch two to three inches thick. You could use old shredded leaves, shredded bark, or fine pieces of pine bark for example, or a combination of materials. You could also apply a light application of a granular form of complete fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Read and follow the label directions. Enjoy your shade plants!
